Readings: Matthew 18:1-5, 10
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”
Reflection:
Gathered around the altar are children of all ages, from toddler to pre-teen. On this particular Sunday many of the little ones are clutching special “lovies” or stuffed animals. I am sure there were some eye rolls and raised brows from the pews. After participating in our Children’s Liturgy of the Word, these children have chosen to come forward around the altar. Instead of sitting in the pew coloring or zoning out, they have come front and center for the congregation, gathered in person and on livestream, to witness their every wiggle and fidget. They bring their whole selves to the altar.
How often have I arrived at Mass unable to be fully present? I zone out, I allow the stress of the week to fester, I worry about how other people perceive me and my own fidgeting children. Minnie Mouse, a stuffed bunny rabbit, a unicorn with a rainbow-colored main. Each child clings to their little tangible reminder that they are loved and that they are capable of loving. The stuff of our daily life is made whole and perfect through our participation in the Eucharist.
What precious pieces of myself am I holding before the Lord today?
